Eating on a ski vacation has always been about big bucks and little flavour. But one mountain is proving it doesn’t have to be either with an on mountain food truck revolution with local produce for little dollars.

Food has long been the bain of my skiing existence. Too many a credit card has been sent over the limit with overpriced overhyped microwaved rubbish being traded off as supposed “fine dining” by restaurateurs who have clearly not been to a city in over a decade.

Then there’s the bottles of water costing double what they do back home, one minute oats being served up as house made porridge, need I go on?

One North American mountain resort is proving that you can serve both local house made produce and do so at a reasonable price. How? Enter the on mountain food truck.

The Sled is Aspen Snowmass’ on snow version of the food truck phenomenon that saturated the streets of all the great food destination cities including San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York.

The concept is simple. Follow @mtndining on Instagram and Twitter to find out where The Sled will be that day on Buttermilk or Snowmass mountains.

You won’t believe the cost either. For $6, yes $6. That’s right $6!!! You can grab a sandwich and soup combo to keep the insides warm and fuel the muscles for more shredding.

Are we really that surprised? This cool idea has come from the kitchens that also provide a Paleo pack for healthy skiers and boarders looking for protein and fat driven fuel at Bumps at Buttermilk. Not a bad option in a country known more for added sugar in everything – if they could find a way to get sugar into the yolk of an egg they would.

For those that like to keep it local, Bumps also offers “The Local” Crystal River Meats Beef Patty from Carbondale,CO, Fried Duck Egg from Olathe, CO, Tomato Jam from tomatoes in Emma, CO, Spicy Mixed Green from Paonia, CO, all on a brioche bun from Harvest Moon Bakery in Boulder, CO. We can’t guarantee the sugar content but we can guarantee that the produce is all from Colorado.
