The Victoria State Emergency Services are in mid-rescue mode of stranded travellers stuck in their cars.

With a 60+ cm snow storm at Hotham over the weekend, 20 people became stuck on Blue Rag Range Track near Dargo High Plains road close to Hotham Heights around 10.50pm on Sunday night.

Thirteen were rescued yesterday with another six still stuck in their vehicles with food, water and blankets this morning, forced to spend the night in their cars in sub zero conditions.

The conditions have made it very challenging for rescue workers, requiring specialised alpine skill units. Sleds and snow bikes have also been utilised while a fire truck involved in the rescue also became stuck in the heavy snow.

It’s a reminder to carry snow chains at all times as one man’s vehicle rolled in the conditions. He sustained minor injuries.

The road was officially closed with both signage and barricades, however the winter gate had not yet been locked and formally closed for the season.
