A Japan Airlines plane has been engulfed in flames on the tarmac at Tokyo’s Haneda airport around 6pm local time last night.

Flight 516 was travelling from Hokkaido’s Chitose airport at Sapporo to Haneda in Tokyo, a popular route for Japan skiers and boarders.

The Japan Airlines A350 airbus hit a smaller Japan Coast Guard Dash-8 maritime patrol aircraft on the runway while landing.

The Japan Coast Guard plane was preparing to fly to Niigata for earthquake relief. Five of the six coast guard crew died in the crash and the surviving captain has suffered critical injuries.

All 379 passengers and crew on board the Japan Airlines plane were safely evacuated.

Haneda airport originally closed all four airport runways and diverted all flights before reopening three runways on Tuesday evening.

If you are flying into or out of Haneda for your Japan snow holiday check with your airline for any schedule changes.
