Both Hotham and Falls Creek have advised visitors currently in the area to leave and those planning on visiting to reschedule their plans due to the current bushfire alerts in the region.
There is currently a Watch and Act notice in place for Hotham Heights and for Falls Creek.
Campers and visitors in Victoria’s Alpine areas are advised to leave today while it is safe to do so. There are significant fires nearby and increasing risk across the weekend, making travel from the area potentially unsafe.
Both Falls Creak and Hotham have posted advisories on their Facebook pages as follows.
Emergency Services advised Hotham Alpine Resort that due to fire activity in the vicinity, people planning to visit Hotham over the next 48 hours should reconsider their plans due to poor air quality, the risk of increased fire activity, and the possibility of the Great Alpine Road closing.
If you are at Hotham and Falls creek, you should consider leaving now unless you have an urgent requirement to be there.
Your safest point of departure from Hotham is the Great Alpine Road down to Harrietville.
Cyclists planning to ride from Harrietville to Hotham should reschedule their plans based on current conditions, given the poor air quality and also the potential for emergency services vehicles to need to use the road.
Stay informed about current conditions, as they may change rapidly.
