Miranda Wright has been coming to Niseko since 2004 – long before it became one of the most well-known ski resorts in Japan.

She runs the Freeride Lodge, the Hooting Owl Lodge and the Mexican Mule Restaurant and Cantina, and has some of the best tips for where to eat, play and ski.

This is her inside guide.

Why Niseko?

Niseko has the best snow and the most amazing, friendly people. Also there was ample opportunity to get in on the ground level when I bought my first lodge. It has been an interesting journey watching the area develop and take off. I wanted to share this special place with like-minded travellers and continue to live the dream.

Favourite ski run

Gate 11. Before that, it used to be the gates at Annupuri.

Favourite après spot

Mexican Mule. Great food and killer cocktails – it’s also a lot of fun playing foosball in the bar with other guests. We also do trivia nights which is great fun and a great way to meet new people. Another favourite would be BLO BLO for a quick drink after riding, it’s a tiny bar with the most amazing décor and drinks located near the Alpine hotel in Hirafu. Each year there are new venues opening up, so it is always fun to discover these hidden gems.

Favourite on mountain dining

PIC hamburgers at the base of Annupuri, best burgers on the mountain.

Favourite village dining

Rakuda in Niseko Town is a great local restaurant away from the hustle of Hirafu, and they also do free pick up from your accommodation

Must-do snow activity

Snow mobiles! Or a great combo – at Par Powder Paradise, you can get towed up the mountain behind the snow mobiles and get fresh tracks on a private mountain all day.

Favourite non skiing/boarding activity

The onsens and eating!

Favourite spot for a date

Over to the famous restaurant Makkarina  at Makkari. Amazing food and views. For a more casual date, I’d take them to the Mexican Mule for a fun night in a relaxed atmosphere.

Best activity in resort or town for kids/families

The Hilton has a great kids club.

Best breakfast

I can’t wait to try out The House of Machines which has opened in Higashiyama this season, their menu looks great.

Where do you take visitors to impress them?

To the local restaurants in Niseko Town and a few of the out-of-the-way onsens which only locals know about. I also like to take them to the close by mountains which are a quick day trip from Niseko.

What should visitors not leave your resort without doing?

Onsens, Hiking the peak and trying the local food.

What item should visitors take back with them?

Great memories and a thirst to come back for more of the Niseko Pow!
