The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning for western coastal areas of Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama prefectures after a 7.6 magnitude earthquake.

Australian skiers and snowboarders in our Japan Facebook Group have reported feeling the quake in the ski towns of Nozawa, Myoko as well as cultural capitalKyoto and other tourist and ski areas. Though all also report being safe.

However residents in the coastal Noto area in Ishikawa prefecture were asked to evacuate immediately to higher ground as waves as high as five metres have already reached Noto on the coast.

Two reactors at the Shika nuclear power plant in Ishikawa were placed offline before the earthquake, as reported by NHK.

Hakuba Goryu ski resort has cancelled night skiing this evening should there be any after shocks.

More to come.
