Prepare for your next Netflix obsession as the streaming service announces Queenstown, a new drama production currently being filmed in New Zealand.
The 8 part series focuses on the trials and tribulations of a wealthy family and those that work for them set in the backdrop of winter mountains and the glamour of lakeside living. Expect plot twists, power struggles, loyalty challenges and lots of desire plus a few ski shots along the way.
We’re thinking who the drama could be loosely based on and a few local multi-generational wealthy tourism families and techpreuners already come to mind from the uber wealthy set that line the Southern Alps. It’s all lattes at Ayrburn, canapés at Essence, Fusalp and Goldbergh and helicopters on the front lawn.
Amanda Duthie, Netflix Australia and New Zealand Content Director, calls the series “a bold, propulsive story of power, class and family set against the opulent world of a luxury ski town.”
There’s some impressive names behind what could become the next White Lotus fixation.
Writer and creator Chloe Stearns (Wolf Like Me, the upcoming The Falling Girls) is the name behind the project starring Rufus Sewell (The Diplomat) and Frances O’Connor (Wednesday) and directed by Glendyn Ivin (The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, Penguin Bloom) and Roseanne Liang (Avatar: The Last Airbender).
It’s not the first time Queenstown has taken centre stage with the critically acclaimed Holly Hunter Top of the Lake mystery drama series in 2017. But it is the first time fact and fiction will intertwine so closely and no doubt some folks are worried or titillated – who will claim which character is based on them?
Others in the cast include Alycia Debnam-Carey (Apple Cider Vinegar, The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart) and Te Kohe Tuhaka (Chief of War).
Oh, and did we mention John Hamm (Mad Men, The Morning Show, Friends and Neighbours) is one of the executive producers?
