A new way to experience Queenstown’s mountains is taking off, quite literally, this coming winter. Scenic flight operator Air Milford is launching a winter-only Sunset Scenic Flight designed to showcase the Southern Alps during the most photogenic time of day: Golden Hour.
Operating from June 14 to August 31, the new 40-minute experience offers skiers, snowboarders and winter travellers a chance to see Queenstown’s alpine terrain from above as the sun drops low across the horizon, casting light over snow-covered peaks, ridgelines and frozen lakes.
Departing in the late afternoon from Queenstown Airport, the flight tracks across some of the region’s best-known ski terrain at Coronet Peak, Cardrona Alpine Resort and The Remarkables. For anyone who has spent the day carving turns at altitude, it’s a rare opportunity to see the mountains they’ve skied from a completely different perspective.
“Winter in Queenstown really changes how the place feels, and Golden Hour is the best time to see it,” says Antony Sproull, Operations Manager at Air Milford.
“This flight is about making the beauty of the mountains more accessible and giving people the chance to experience their scale and beauty in a way you simply can’t from the ground. It also feels like it stretches the short winter days a little longer, as we head out chasing the last of the sun.”
The launch taps into a growing appetite for alpine experiences that go beyond just skiing and snowboarding. While Queenstown’s slopes remain the hero attraction during winter, visitors are increasingly looking for ways to experience the mountains off the snow from heli-dining and hot pools to scenic flights and stargazing.

Timing-wise, Golden Hour might just be the ultimate flex.
Air Milford has been operating scenic flights across New Zealand’s lower South Island for more than 50 years and has built a strong reputation for boutique alpine aviation experiences. Flights operate aboard high-wing Cessna aircraft specifically chosen for scenic visibility, with local pilots providing in-flight commentary about the region’s mountain ranges, ski fields and landscapes throughout the journey.
The Sunset Scenic Flight operates daily during winter, with limited seats available on each departure. Minimum numbers apply – NZD$399 Adult | NZD$299 Child.
