Some Kiwis don’t like the way Aussie tourists drive

A New Zealand petition calls for tourist drivers to wear T-plates when driving.

If you’ve ever driven the roads to ski fields in New Zealand then you know the meaning of ‘life in own hands’.  At best they can be vertigo inducing at worst they can be a single one way dirt road with no guard rails cut into a steep slope of scree. Even metro living Kiwis find these roads challenging.

It would now appear those same metro living Kiwis are concerned for their own lives not at the hands of the road infrastructure but more at the driving hands of tourists. The T-plates for Tourists campaign is gaining speed (pun not intended) across the ditch with over 3000 likes on their Facebook page promoting a petition on Change.org to gain Prime Minister John Key’s attention.

Their plight is driven (another pun not intended) by the statistic that 37 percent of crashed in ‘some regions’ of New Zealand between 2009 and 2013 involved an overseas driver.

There is even talk of a ‘written test’ required by tourists to get their T Plate before driving on Kiwi roads.

The T plate idea has certainly garnered some comedy gold on their Facebook page if nothing else.

So, what do you think? Would you display a T Plate for tourist drivers when driving in New Zealand?
