Mt Hutt Ski Area will undertake a $12 million expansion of its base building area this summer, with the project scheduled for completion ahead of winter 2027.
The expansion will increase the size of Mt Hutt’s outdoor sun deck by almost triple its current size (from 430sqm to 1300sqm) and will be fully heated.
The project will also deliver a new ground floor toilet block, improved heated access steps to snow level, an additional cafe outlet and extra storage space for guests and staff.
Mt Hutt Ski Area Manager James McKenzie says the focus is on increasing space and improving the overall functionality of the base area.
“We have a great base lodge that works really well for us operationally, but we’re now at the point where adding more space and seating will make a real difference, particularly on those blue bird days, after new snow, when everyone wants to be up the mountain, James says.
“It also gives us the opportunity to introduce an exciting new food and beverage outlet. We’ll have more to share about that over the summer.”
The investment is part of Mt Hutt’s ongoing approach to growing and improving its facilities in line with demand.
“Mt Hutt has become gradually and consistently busier over time. We’re now matching our investment in the base facilities to accommodate that growth, James says.
“We’re also creating a foundation that will allow us to continue to grow sustainably in line with future demand.”
Ashburton’s Bradfords Building has been selected as the principal contractor for the project, with construction to begin following the 2026 winter season.
