Christchurch’s closest ski area, Porters, reports the best early season base for this time of the year, following Canterbury’s recent cold snap.

Up to 30 cm of new snow dumped on the upper slopes. Overall the upper mountain average base is 75cm as a result of the recent and earlier snow falls.

“It is a very promising start to the season”, says Sales and Marketing Manager Anton Wilke. “What’s more, the temperatures have dropped enough for us to start making snow as well”.

After the most successful season on record in 2015, this early snow for 2016 bodes well for the season ahead. The Easy Rider quad chairlift, which was installed for the 2015 season, performed beyond expectations. It moves up to 2000 skiers and riders per hour thus reducing waiting times and overall enhancing the guest experience.

Snow showers are forecast today and tomorrow at Porters.

Porters is on track for its scheduled opening day of 22 June 2016.
