I’m writing this while at Hotham ski resort. Its almost a month into the Australian ski season and if it wasn’t for the tireless work of resort operations there wouldn’t be one right now. Yet skiers and boarders are genuinely smiling and we have the snowmakers to thank for that.

Heavenly Valley at Hotham opened today. A truly mammoth effort while in the vice of El Nino.

So we sent DJ Eddy’s alter ego, Paul ‘Buff’ Farnell, down Snake Gully with photographer Mark Tsukasov for first tracks on the first advanced terrain to open at Hotham for 2015.

Of course we went down after him and lapped the resort’s lift operated man made snow runs for a couple of hours without a patch of ice under foot. Being out in the mountains, skis under foot and snow to slide on certainly made our day and it sure beat a day in front of a computer screen.

There’s talk of a major snow storm on the way and even greater talk of mammoth snow dumps next week.

In the meantime we say buy your local snowmaker a beer, they deserve it. Though in the words of Annaelies Zirknitzer at Zirky’s this morning “only buy them one, we want them to keep making snow.”
