There comes a point in every skier’s life when driving from Sydney (or further north) to Perisher or Thredbo in one hit stops feeling like an adventure and starts feeling like an endurance event.

You leave before dawn convinced you’ll “just smash it out”. Six hours later you’ve had three servo coffees, the kids have asked “Are we there yet?” approximately 1,372 times, and by the time you click into your skis you’re already thinking about après.

Lucky for all of us, there is another way.

Nesuto Canberra Apartment Hotel has launched a Snow Stopover Package for the 2026 ski season, and frankly, we’re wondering why more people haven’t been doing this all along. Ourselves included.

Canberra sits almost perfectly halfway between Sydney and the NSW ski resorts. It’s around three hours from Sydney and another 2.5 to three hours to Perisher or Thredbo, meaning you can break the drive, sleep in an actual bed, have a proper breakfast and still be pulling into the snow ahead of plenty of day trippers.

It’s the ski equivalent of pacing yourself. Even better, the package has been designed by people who clearly understand skiers.

You’ll receive 30 per cent off studio, one and two-bedroom apartments and have access to secure ski and snowboard storage, complimentary parking (pre-booking required), 24-hour reception and flexibility for those inevitable late-night arrivals when Sydney traffic laughs at your carefully planned Friday night departure time.

Rates start from AUD$150 per night (normally from $195) for stays between 15 June and 15 September 2026.

Families will probably appreciate the stop even more than everyone else. Make Canberra part of the holiday. The apartments come with full kitchens, laundries and generous living spaces, so there’s room to cook dinner, dry wet gear and mentally prepare everyone for snow chains the next morning.

And because this isn’t just any stopover, there are plenty of ways to unwind before tackling the mountains. Take a dip in the indoor heated pool, soak in the spa, warm up in the sauna, squeeze in a gym session if you’re feeling virtuous, or simply head up to the rooftop BBQ terrace.

The location doesn’t hurt either. Sitting on Akuna Street in the heart of Canberra, you’re a short stroll from Canberra Centre, restaurants, bars and Lake Burley Griffin if you feel like stretching your legs after a few hours behind the wheel.

There’s also one small but significant detail we love. Nesuto’s Flexible Stay Promise means you can cancel free until 6pm on the day you arrive.

Given snow forecasts have been known to change more often than a skier’s WhatsApp group plans, that’s a welcome safety net.

Look, we’re not saying you can’t drive all the way from Sydney to the snow in one hit.

We’re just saying you’ll probably enjoy your first day on the mountain a whole lot more if you haven’t already completed your own personal Dakar Rally to get there.
