The ski resorts of Australia are laying low this Opening Weekend with some not opening at all. First  Perisher opened for skiing today without telling a soul now Thredbo are not opening for skiing or boarding.

Like Perisher who kept their opening quiet, Thredbo has also kept their non-opening on the down low. Though word is at both camps, that staff knew about this for the past couple of days. But then the royal staff knew Harry and Meghan were engaged before we did. It takes time to set the scene for the big reveal. But, I digress.

Thredbo resort announced their ‘non opening’ with little fan fare on a social media post today (wording below), albeit with a funny video with patches of snow so at least they, and we, can laugh at the current conditions and talk of, well, rain. At least down low. There is, thank god, a chance of snow up high. Where we can’t get to it.

Come dance up a storm?Unfortunately due to current conditions there won’t be skiing & boarding this weekend…But in true Thredbo style we’ll still be partying with a jam-packed long weekend of events, free activities for the kids, a massive fireworks display and a huge free concert featuring Hot Dub Time Machine and Young Franco.

So without the lifts turning, what’s a skier or boarder to do? Tobogganing anyone? Oh, oops, too soon?

To be fair when was the last time you got top to bottom turns on an Opening Weekend anyway? Better to spend your time swiping left or right at the Thredbo Tinder party (yes there is one) on Sunday afternoon or the Long Lunch (though tickets are as rare as a powder turn on a Queen’s weekend) or stretch it out with the mountain snowga sessions held each morning on the river bank (bring your own mat or Matt if you’ve been to the Tinder party).

Whatever you do during the Thredbo non Opening Weekend, look out for Jackson Aces in the village, he’s the coolest magician in all the land and had me stumped a gazillion times last year. The man has fast hands, that’s all I’m going to say.

So, before you all start crying, wailing and weeping over the ski season that has yet to truly open, remember it’s early days. Sure, New Zealand has had a ripper of an opening but last year they had a not so pleasant season while we were dining (and gloating) on powder snow over our heads well into September. Karma, anyone?

Who knows what the season has in store? No one, well, apart from Alex Zadnik our meteorologist but even he says it’s too early to predict August.

It’s not the first time Australians haven’t skied at Thredbo on the Opening Weekend. I’m tipping it won’t be the last, either. The same way I’m tipping last season’s ripper metre plus snow storms won’t be the last we’ll see in years to come.

Snow is, a fickle beast with serious commitment issues. Remember that and play hard to get not desperate and eager.

She hates that.
